| Definitions - Explanations of street truck terms. |
| 0/2 is used to eliminate the rake look and lower the gap in the rear. Is accomplished with 2” drop shackles. |
| 2/4 a mild drop it lowers the front 2 and the rear 4 inches. Front is usually achieved with drop coils, spindles, or lower control arm. The rear is lowered with a hanger/shackle combo or 4” drop leaf springs. |
| 4/6 the most popular drop on pickups. It lowers the front 4” and the rear 6” by a number of ways. Front can be achieved with a combination of a drop spindles and a 2” coil or lower and upper control arms. Rear is usually done with a flip kit, but it can also be achieved with drop leaf springs and shackles. |
| 5/7 or 5/8 is one of the most extreme drops and is probably the lowest/extreme drop put on trucks without using airbags. |
| Air bags = air suspension which are used for increased handling, ride, and versatility. Can be adjusted to raise and lower the truck from the ground to the sky. |
| Air Compressor = used in bagged trucks they provide the power to increase the pressure in the air bags to raise the truck. |
| Backspacing = The distance from the mounting surface of the wheel to the farthest point of the backside of the rim, its usually measured in inches. |
| Billet = A piece which has been machined from solid metal. |
| Bump steer = The change in a tire's camber and toe-out caused by hitting bumps. In incorrectly lowered trucks it may occur. |
| Bump stops = located on the frame above the axle it limits extreme suspension travel and harm to the chassis. Typically in lowered trucks they are replaced with shorter urethane for the shorter travel. |
| C notch = a cut in the frame to allow for axle travel on larger drops. It is reinforced with a bracket to provide strength. |
| Cat back = an exhaust system which includes the muffler and all the hardware from the catalytic converter and back. Sound and performance gains are seen with this option. |
| Centerline = The center point of the wheel from the face to the backside of the wheel |
| C.I.D. = Cubic Inch Displacement. Volume of an engine’s cylinder and combustion chamber, with the piston at bottom dead center, multiplied by its number of cylinders. (bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x no. of cylinders) |
| Cut out = a y shaped pipe which is placed before the muffler and is covered by a plate which can be removed for optimum performance. The plate is removed mostly when on the racetrack. Electric cutouts are also available now. |
| Debagging = a term for removing the exterior molding from the truck. |
| Descreening = a popular free mod to the MAF, removing the screen from the MAF it frees up the amount of air flow into the motor. |
| Dumps = another name for turndowns. |
| ECM = engine control module, a device which monitors engine operations. |
| EFI = electronic fuel injection |
| EGR = exhaust gas recirculation. It is a pollution control system that returns exhaust gases to the motor for reburn, which helps in emmsisions. |
| Flip kit = lowers the rear end of the truck 6” by relocating the leaf springs underneath the axle. Includes a c notch bracket, u bolts and all the hardware needed. |
| Glasspack = a long cylindrical tubing filled with packing, that takes the place of mufflers. They are typically the loudest systems, out execeeding noise levels of most mufflers. |
| H pipe = a pipe which runs perpendicular to two exhaust pipes. It evens out the pressure in the pipes. |
| Hangers = used with shackles in 4” rear dropped trucks. A bracket which relocates the shackles higher making the truck lower. |
| Headers = replaces the stock exhaust manifold and increases the exit of exhaust for better results. |
| Helper bags = bags put over leaf springs to restore the truck’s towing capabilities on lowered trucks. |
| IAT = intake-air-temperature sensor, located between the maf sensor and the air filter. |
| LED = Light Emitting Diode. A light shedding diode that used as a signal indicator or display purposes. |
| MAF = mass air flow sensor, located before the air filter on the air intake. It measures the amount of air flow controlling the air/fuel ratio. |
| Monochrome = refers to painting everything to match one color. |
| Offset = Is the distance between the centerline of the wheel and the mounting surface. (usually measured in millimeters). Positive offset wheels have the surface more to the face of the wheel. |
| Plus sizing = usually done to select a better performing tire but maintaining the stock tire dimensions. It deals with increasing the car wheel diameter while decreasing the aspect ratio of the tire. This provides a shorter sidewall height without affecting the overall diameter of the tire. |
| Rollpan = either a bolt on or welded formed metal which is placed in the rear end replacing the stock bumper. |
| Shackles = used to relocate the leaf springs to lower the body. Attaches the end of the leaf springs and connects to the hanger. |
| Shaved = term which describes the removal of a exterior part for a clean appearance. Usually side moldings, emblems, logos, door handles, tailgate handles, and tail lights. |
| SOTP = seat of the pants |
| Spacer (tbi) = a metal spacer placed on top of the TBI, which increases the area for the air/fuel mixture. More performance gains are seen in the 88-95 trucks than in the newer vortec motors. |
| Spindles = they lower the front end of the truck 2 inches. |
| Static drop = a truck lowered using metal components rather than air. |
| TBI = throttle body injection, basically a computerized carb which regulates the flow of fuel into the intake manifold. Was replaced in 1996. |
| Turndowns = a round elbow placed just after the muffler for the exhaust to exit. Increases performance and sound level. |
| Vortec = introduced in 1996 it replaced the TBI and led way to better heads and multiport fuel injection. |
| WOT = wide open throttle |
| X pipe = used in most dual exhaust systems, smoothing out the pressure and improving performance. Located between the catalytic converter and the muffler. |
| Y pipe = a pipe which merges two pipes into one. |
